Meet Your Photography Instructor – Bjørn Joachimsen

Born and raised on the spectacular coastline of Northern Norway, Bjørn Joachimsen has spent a lifetime immersed in the landscapes that have shaped both his life and his photography. Deeply connected to the sea, towering coastal mountains, dramatic fjords and ever-changing Arctic light, Bjørn brings an intimate knowledge of Lofoten that only comes from decades of living and photographing this extraordinary region.

With a background in history, sociology and social anthropology, Bjørn’s photography is driven by far more than technical excellence. His work explores the relationship between people and landscape, the passage of time, and the remarkable natural architecture sculpted over thousands of years by ice, water and wind. His passion lies in revealing the hidden beauty of remote places and inspiring others to appreciate and protect these fragile environments.

A master of composition, Bjørn is drawn to the interplay of shape, line, light and negative space, often creating powerful, minimalist images that evoke a profound sense of place. While much of his personal work is produced using traditional large-format film photography and black and white imagery, his extensive knowledge of digital photography, landscape composition and post-processing makes him an exceptional educator for photographers of all levels.

Bjørn has been photographing the Lofoten Islands since 2001 and has led specialist photography workshops throughout the region for many years. His teaching philosophy is refreshingly open and generous—he believes knowledge is meant to be shared. Throughout the retreat he provides continuous hands-on coaching in the field, helping guests understand not only how to create beautiful images, but why an image works. From reading the changing Arctic weather and light, to refining composition, mastering camera settings and developing creative confidence, every session is designed to help photographers grow.

In addition to his personal photographic projects, Bjørn undertakes commissioned work for business and government clients, while regularly presenting lectures, workshops and photography courses throughout Norway.

Guests on our Women in Photography – Lofoten Islands & Northern Norway Retreat will benefit from Bjørn’s exceptional local knowledge, decades of photographic experience, and genuine passion for helping others discover both the beauty of Lofoten and their own creative potential behind the camera.

“Bjørn’s philosophy is simple: nothing is kept secret. He openly shares the techniques, knowledge and creative processes that have shaped his photography, ensuring every guest leaves with greater confidence, stronger skills and a deeper appreciation of the remarkable landscapes of Northern Norway.”
