We are thrilled to introduce Ela Hunt as the ornithologist for our 2026 Chatham Islands Bird Tours. With a deep passion for seabirds and conservation, Ela brings a wealth of knowledge and firsthand experience to our tours, offering an incredible opportunity for guests to learn from a dedicated expert.

Ela’s love for wildlife began in her hometown of Wellington, New Zealand, where she grew up in an adventurous, outdoorsy family. Her fascination with seabirds took flight in 2022 during a university field trip to the Chatham Islands, where she had the unforgettable experience of holding a Chatham Petrel. That moment ignited a lifelong passion for these incredible birds and the unique ecosystems they inhabit.

Currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Ecology, Ela’s research focuses on the critically endangered Chatham Island Tāiko (Magenta Petrel), a species found only in the Chatham Islands. In 2024, she spent months volunteering as a field assistant, actively studying and monitoring a variety of endemic bird species. Some of her most memorable experiences include assisting with GPS tracking of Chatham Petrels and Tāiko and contributing to the annual Black Robin census on Rangatira / South East Island.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Ela works as a guide at the Royal Albatross Centre in Dunedin, where she leads tours to the only mainland albatross colony in the Southern Hemisphere. Her enthusiasm and deep knowledge make her an exceptional guide, ensuring an engaging and educational experience for birding enthusiasts of all levels.

Beyond her professional life, Ela is an avid wildlife photographer and birdwatcher, with a particular love for pelagic seabird trips. Her passion for adventure, travel, and sharing the wonders of nature shines through in everything she does, making her a fantastic addition to our 2026 bird tours.

Join us on this extraordinary journey through the Chatham Islands, where Ela’s expertise will enrich your experience as you witness the region’s diverse birdlife and stunning landscapes. Don’t miss this chance to explore one of the world’s most remarkable birding destinations with an exceptional ornithologist by your side!
