South Australia Seascape & Bird ICM Photography Retreat

A Fine Art Intentional Camera Movement Experience

Hosted by Karen Waller & Lesley Whyte

Join us for an extraordinary 6-day, 7 night immersive photography retreat exploring the art of Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) through seascapes, coastal landscapes and birds in flight across the spectacular coastline of South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula.

Led by Karen Waller, one of Australia’s leading fine art ICM photographers, this unique small-group retreat has been carefully designed for photographers wanting to push their creativity, slow down, and create artistic images filled with movement, emotion and atmosphere.

This is far more than a photography workshop — it is an immersive creative experience focused on vision, interpretation and learning how to transform ordinary scenes into painterly fine art imagery.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Troubridge Island Experience

A true highlight of this retreat is our exclusive two-night stay on remote Troubridge Island — one of South Australia’s most extraordinary photographic locations.

Surrounded by turquoise waters, rugged coastline, seabirds and the island’s iconic lighthouse, Troubridge Island provides the perfect setting for fine art ICM photography.

Imagine standing alongside Karen as she shares her techniques for creating her iconic lighthouse and birds-in-flight ICM imagery — learning how movement, shutter speed and composition combine to produce soft, expressive and beautifully abstract photographic art.

With minimal light pollution, uninterrupted horizons and ever-changing coastal conditions, every sunrise and sunset becomes an opportunity to create something truly unique.

What You’ll Photograph

Throughout the retreat you’ll explore:

• Fine art seascape ICM
• Birds in flight using ICM techniques
• Coastal movement and wave patterns
• Lighthouse photography
• Abstract coastal textures and colour
• Gallahs and native birdlife in motion
• Long exposure and creative shutter techniques
• Layered movement and painterly compositions
• Storytelling through movement and atmosphere

Back on the mainland of Yorke Peninsula, the creative journey continues with opportunities to photograph coastal cliffs, rugged beaches, ocean textures and birdlife including colourful galahs using a variety of ICM techniques and approaches.

Capture to Print Experience

As with all Women in Photography “Capture to Print” retreats, the final stage of the creative process is just as important as the image capture itself.

The retreat concludes with a dedicated editing and printing session where Karen and Lesley will guide you through selecting, refining and preparing your images for fine art print production.

Imagine leaving the retreat with your own selection of professionally printed A3+ fine art photographic prints, ready for framing and display — tangible artworks that reflect your creative journey and growth throughout the retreat.

Professional Epson fine art printing equipment and premium papers will be available onsite during the retreat.

Suitable For

This retreat is designed for photographers who are already confident operating their camera in manual mode and who have experience using in-camera multi-image or creative exposure settings.

Participants should also be confident using both Adobe Lightroom Classic and Adobe Photoshop, as editing and creative post-processing form an important part of the retreat experience and final print workflow.

Due to the advanced creative techniques explored throughout the retreat — including bird ICM, layered movement, long exposures and expressive fine art capture — this retreat is not recommended for complete beginners unless you have previously attended one of our ICM Photography Retreats.

This experience is ideal for photographers wanting to further develop their artistic vision, expand their creative workflow and explore more advanced Intentional Camera Movement techniques in a supportive small-group environment.

Itinerary

Itinerary Highlights

Monday 5 April 2027 – Welcome to South Australia & Transfer to Yorke Peninsula

Meet Lesley Whyte at Adelaide Airport at 11.00am before we commence our scenic drive to Warooka on South Australia’s stunning Yorke Peninsula (approximately 3 hours).

As we leave the city behind, the landscape transforms into rugged coastlines, rural scenery, salt lakes and endless photographic inspiration — setting the tone for an immersive creative retreat focused entirely on Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) photography.

Following check-in and a relaxed welcome gathering, we begin preparing for the days ahead of creative exploration, image-making, learning and collaboration.

During the retreat, two unforgettable nights will be spent on remote Troubridge Island — an extraordinary opportunity to immerse yourself in photographing coastal movement, birdlife and the island’s iconic lighthouse environment.

The remaining nights are hosted between the beautiful Ballara Art & Lifestyle Retreat and the welcoming Warooka Hotel.

The Warooka Hotel is a traditional local rural hotel offering seven warm, comfortable and safe 1970’s-style motel units attached to the hotel — perfectly suited to this relaxed and authentic Yorke Peninsula photography experience.

Accommodation during the retreat is intentionally small and intimate, with two photographers staying at Ballara Art Retreat and four photographers accommodated at the Warooka Hotel — located only approximately one minute’s walk apart, allowing the group to remain closely connected throughout the retreat experience.

Over the next six days you will dive deeply into the creative world of ICM photography under the guidance of acclaimed Australian fine art ICM photographer Karen Waller and Lesley Whyte.

  • Coastal and seascape ICM
  • Birds in flight and birdlife movement
  • Layered abstract compositions
  • Light, texture and motion
  • Creative camera techniques in changing natural conditions
  • Developing your own artistic style and visual interpretation

Throughout the retreat we explore a range of spectacular Yorke Peninsula locations, taking advantage of sunrise and sunset conditions, dramatic coastlines, remote beaches and abundant birdlife.

This is a highly immersive, hands-on retreat designed for photographers wanting to move beyond traditional photography and create unique fine art imagery.

Saturday 10 April & Sunday 11 April 2027 – Editing & Fine Art Printing Sessions

Our final two days are dedicated to transforming your captures into finished works of art.

Karen will work closely with you on selecting and refining your strongest images, assisting with creative direction, image finishing and preparing files for print.

Lesley Whyte will guide and assist with the professional printing process, helping you produce a beautiful selection of your images on premium fine art papers in both A3+ and A4 sizes.

One of the highlights of the retreat is seeing your creative work come to life in print — ready for framing, exhibition or display at home.

Monday 12 April 2027 – Return to Adelaide

We depart Yorke Peninsula early this morning for our return journey to Adelaide Airport.

Arrival will be scheduled to connect with homeward flights departing after mid-day.

You leave not only with new skills and creative inspiration, but also with a collection of professionally printed fine art ICM images ready to enjoy for years to come.
